Cefn Mawr

A town with a significant industrial heritage

Cefn Mawr was a new town created by the opportunities the canal brought, when a settlement grew up around stone quarries, ironworks, clay works and coal mines.

Interestingly, the ribs for the arches of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct were cast at William Hazeldine’s Plas Kynaston iron foundry in Cefn Mawr.

Behind the main street running through Cefn Mawr ran the tramway, indeed, many of Cefn Mawr’s streets began life as tramways.

Today Cefn Mawr is home to a number of local shops and businesses, and a supermarket.

There are a number of interesting, historical walks which can be taken from Cefn Mawr.
