Cefn Mawr was a new town created by the opportunities the canal brought, when a settlement grew up around stone quarries, ironworks, clay works and coal mines. The ribs for the arches of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct were cast at William Hazeldine's Plas Kynastons iron foundry in Cefn Mawr.

Today Cefn Mawr is home to a number of local shops and businesses aswell as a well known supermarket.
There are a number of historial walks which can be taken.

Many of Cefn Mawr's streets began life as tramways. Behind the main street running through Cefn Mawr ran the tramway, which carried stone from the quarries in Rhosymedre for the building of the Aqueduct in Trevor.
